What is pilates?

As well as being brilliant for improving your strength and flexibility, pilates is also a really effective mood booster! It gets your endorphins flowing, helping to reduce stress and aid relaxation - it can even help you sleep better! 


Pilates is also a very low-impact form of exercise, meaning it’s great for anyone who’s recovering from an injury, mature students and anyone with joint problems.

What are the benefits of pilates?

Pilates is an exercise involving slow and precise movements that strengthen all muscle groups, helping to improve your balance and posture, while boosting blood circulation around the body. 


Pilates was first devised by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century to help the physical rehabilitation of war veterans. Since then, it has grown to become a global movement famed for its incredible benefits for the body and mind.

But I’ve never done Pilates before. It sounds complicated…

Not at all! Even if you’re a complete beginner, we have a class to suit you. Our introductory Pilates classes will show you everything you need to know about pilates at a pace that’s stress-free and tailored to you. 


As you progress, you can move up to our advanced classes that will challenge you more and help you push yourself to keep improving and getting stronger.


If you’re coming to our studio after practising pilates before, you can jump right into our intermediate or advanced group for a dynamic, intensive workout that’s sure to get your blood pumping and your muscles working.

What types of Pilates are available at London Road?

At London Road Health & Fitness we offer four different variations on Pilates. Each one has its own unique flavour, giving you a range of styles and benefits to choose from!

Mat Pilates

If you’re looking for a Pilates programme to boost your fitness and get that endorphin rush, Mat Pilates is a great place to start. Designed to be suitable for all ages and experience, mat pilates is an excellent all-rounder. 

Focussing on precise, deliberate movements and well-known poses such as the Plank, the Swan and the Hundred, our relaxed and friendly group classes help you tone your muscles, increase flexibility and improve your strength and posture. All you need is yourself, a Pilates mat and a positive attitude so this format is great for those who want to practise at home between sessions too!

Reformer Pilates

Don’t be put off by the sci-fi sounding name - the Reformer is a popular pilates staple that’s fun and great for flexibility!


Reformer pilates was invented by Joseph Pilates himself. It uses a reformer machine that’s essentially a bed-like frame with a platform held in place by springs. This handy machine lets you work on a huge range of movements involving pushing or pulling with resistance. 


In our Reformer classes, we work on slow, flowing movements that challenge each muscle group in turn. This style of pilates is amazing for strengthening and toning the body while improving your posture. 


Our friendly and enthusiastic Reformer pilates instructors will guide you carefully and constructively through the Reformer workout to make sure it is tailored to your strength and ability level. If you’ve never tried this awesome exercise before, now’s your chance!

Springboard Pilates

Looking for something a little different? Try Springboard pilates! 


Springboard pilates uses a wall-mounted springboard to create a dynamic and varied workout. Our Springboard Pilates classes are ideal for first-timers, as well as experienced students who want a more physically demanding workout from the off. 


Thanks to varying levels of resistance, these classes are easily adaptable to different levels and strengths. Our experienced Springboard instructors will tailor the workout to you - so you can feel the burn without wearing yourself out too much! 


The unique setup also provides an extra coordination challenge to engage both your mind and body. You’ll get a great full body workout from Springboard Pilates and will see and feel the results from just a few classes!

Barre Pilates

If you love a great workout and a dance, this ballet-inspired Pilates class is the one for you!


Release your inner ballerina with this full-body workout designed to challenge the full body. Working with a barre - a horizontal handrail traditionally used in ballet, that acts as your support for the exercises - you’ll find this style of pilates perfect for improving your muscle strength, flexibility and coordination. Accompanied by plenty of uplifting, motivational music, it will leave you toe-tapping and with a spring in your step!


Don’t worry if you’ve never tried it before - our instructors are trained to work with complete beginners and ballerina pros alike!
